Avon and Somerset police have warned that they will crack down on impromptu and unlicensed events centred around the Glastonbury Festival. "With the summer weather already with us people may be tempted to hold some form of unlicensed or illegal event in the Avon and Somerset area," says Chief Superintendent Lawrie Lewis. "The message from the police is simple - don't bother. We are ready and will use the laws at our disposal to prevent people causing noise and nuisance to our local communities."
The police can take action against organisers under various legislation, including public order, highways and environmental protection laws and taking action when they consider serious public disorder, serious damage to property or serious disruption to the life of the community could be affected. Chief Superintendent Lewis explains that the force’s policy is to protect the public against unlicensed events that “have not made adequate provision in terms of safety of those attending.”
"There are a number of planned and licensed events taking place in Avon and Somerset in the coming months and we would encourage people to attend those," he adds.
