"1997 was a great summer for me personally because I'd just finished my A-levels. All my friends had come down to the festival and we were all celebrating the end of school. Then, on Friday, night, just as Radiohead started their headline set, the heavens opened. It was real torrential rain - the first time we'd had that at the festival since 1985. Yet it was a magical moment.
"The whole crowd was at a standstill, utterly transfixed. This was just after OK Computer had come out, and the songs from that album really seemed to relate to the situation - especially, of course, the "rain down" section of Paranoid Android. I'll never forget it.
"It's a strange thing - adversity often brings out the best in people. When it rains the liggers and industry people tend to leave, and you're left with the real hardcore. The mud always brings out the British spirit." |
