COMMIT TO STOP CLIMATE CHANGE AT GLASTONBURY 2007!

Glastonbury 2007 will draw attention to the global problem of climate change, by encouraging festival-goers to sign up to the new I Count campaign. The target is for 100,000 people to make a commitment to reducing their carbon footprint by the end of the festival weekend.

The I Count campaign encourages people to take 16 steps in their everyday lives to reduce their carbon footprint – and to urge the world’s leaders to take climate change seriously. The campaign is supported by the Stop Climate Chaos coalition of over 50 organisations, as well as the three main causes supported by Glastonbury – Oxfam, Greenpeace and WaterAid.

Everybody arriving at the festival will be given a special wristband with the I Count message, “We can stop climate chaos”. As people sign up, the rising total will be registered at the main Pyramid Stage.

“We’ve put a lot of effort into focusing Glastonbury on the environment and climate change this year,” says Michael Eavis. “We hope to see at least 100,000 new supporters sign up to the I Count campaign – and I’ll be the first to put my name down.”

Climate change is now acknowledged as the single biggest threat to the planet. It will increasingly affect everyone – rich and poor alike. The richer countries must take urgent action to reduce their carbon output, help deal with the effects of global warming already being seen, and help provide new technologies that allow the poorest countries to develop in a climate friendly way.
