As we all know, Michael and Emily Eavis love their music. They champion countless new bands, unsigned artists and all sorts of weird and wonderful outfits from all corners of the world, at each Glastonbury Festival. But have they ever come across someone who didn’t quite make the grade?

“Who was that cowboy with shiny winkle-picker shoes?” Eavis senior asked his daughter when Q posed this question recently. The lacklustre performance came from none other than Dwight Yoakam, country troubadour and part-time actor, who made a less-than-spectacular appearance at the 1994 festival.

“He didn’t like it, and we didn’t like him,” says a Eavis, still clearly puzzled as to what the problem was. “He was sitting in his cabin and I had to say, come on then, you’ve only got 20 minutes left. He only had 40 minutes anyway, so he was sulking for 20 minutes. He didn’t understand what the festival was – he’d heard all the Glastonbury hype, but it was all mucky and yucky. He thought, Why am I here? It was a bit of a bad booking on our part.”

Still, by offering the songwriter the opportunity to portray a man pushed beyond the limits of human endurance, Mr Yoakam had the perfect rehersal for playing a psychotic nutter in the 2002 film, Panic Room. So, something good came of it, after all…
