Glastonbury attracts some of the biggest artists in the world and this year’s line-up has proved no different – The Who, The Killers, Arctic Monkeys and Björk are just some of the stars who’ll be strutting their stuff at Worthy Farm in three weeks’ time. But which acts are still on Michael and Emily Eavis’s wish list?
“I’d say probably The Grateful Dead,” Michael Eavis told Q recently. “But it’s too late because Jerry Garcia died. Neil Young would be a great one and it would be great to have Tom Waits. I think we ought to give up on all the super big rock bands, because they would have played by now if they wanted to - mentioning no names…”
In terms of who has an open invitation to come back to Glastonbury any time, Eavis senior has no reservations. “There’s always Radiohead and Coldplay,” he smiles. “Coldplay are coming back with some new stuff. And there’s always Paul McCartney, because he was so good last time - it was really fantastic show.”
But there’s one band that the Godfather Of Rock Festivals would love to see grace the Pyramid Stage again. “How about the original line-up of The Smiths?” he says wistfully, recalling the Manchester legends’ storming set in 1984. “To get Johnny Marr and Morrissey together, a combined effort. We should work on that one.”
So here’s a message for all florists in the Pilton area: it might be worth you getting your gladioli ready for June 2008?
