Way back in time, BG (Before Glastonbury), we told you about 1,000 Faces Of Glastonbury, a special project by photographer Julie Kim, who was planning to document the World’s Greatest Festival in a very unusual way. The idea was to take 1,000 individual photo portraits of 1,000 individual festival-goers, thus capturing the depth and diversity of your typical (or untypical) Glastonbury-goer.
But, thanks to the weather and the resultant general demeanour of the Glastonbury throng, things didn’t go entirely to plan. “It was a lot harder to do than I expected!” laughs Julie. “I was going well on Friday and Saturday, then just lost the will to live by Sunday. But then, so did everyone else - people weren't so interested in having their pictures taken by then. I got 528 faces in the end.
“I shot nearly everyone in the beer tent by the Acoustic Stage one afternoon because it was chucking it down outside. Everyone was so friendly - I had such a great time talking to people. I also spoke to bands, including some Emerging Talent winners like Blue Bullet, Pinstripe, Onions, The Grim Northern Social, The Epstein and also Alice McLaughlin.
“Plus, I met a local farmer who gave Michael Eavis a hunk of his cheddar in exchange for a ticket and a bloke from my hometown in Canada - what are the chances of that, eh?”
But 528 faces isn’t bad, and you can see the results online now at www.glastonburyfaces.co.uk. Maybe the rest will follow next year?
