The mythical story of the Angel could be the work of stoned hippies who’ve overindulged in the old lysergic, but let’s give it some credence, as we are talking about Glastonbury after all. Apparently, in 1971 a “kind of rainbowy, shimmery thing” (according to local longhair Anith Ginn) appeared some 50 feet above the stage, as folkie type Melanie played. Not unreasonably, the MC took the opportunity to address this would-be deity – Jesus had been rumoured to have visited the area, after all. “Whatever you are,” he called out, “if you’re an angel, then talk to us.” Needless to say, the “thing” didn’t say a word and vanished immediately. Perhaps it wanted to beat the traffic.
However, the garbled visions of thousands of individuals who may have had their perception slightly skewed was not confined to the early years of the festival. To this day we have the phenomenon of that weird ring of lights that travels over the site in the early hours of the morning, which prompts many a scrambled conversation: “What is that?” “It’s a plane” “What, moving that slowly, and that close to the ground” “It’s not a UFO” “It IS”, etc etc. And then there are the Chinese lanterns that inevitably get mistaken for stars, spaceships, or Fireworks With Minds Of Their Own. It’s a crazy place.
Have you ever seen an angel at Glastonbury? Tell us!
