The five scariest things at Glastonbury 2007

Glastonbury is a playground, a field of dreams, a vacation from the everyday humdrum world. But occasionally it throws up something that’s hard to cope with and you really don’t need to see. Here are our choices for the top scary moments this year:

1. THE BIG SCARY HEAD
This is scary. Even more scary in real life.

2. THE CHEMICAL BROTHERS CLOWN
OK, you’re frugging nicely to the Chems, despite the pissing rain… the lightshow is amazing, the sound booming, then up pops a terrifying clown face, 50 feet wide, intoning the lyrics to Get Yourself High. Over and over again. Not good. Not good at all.

3. THE TRASH CITY AREA
Giant robots. Huge, mutated dolls’ limbs. Two crashed jumbo jets and half a New York shop front. This year, the boys and girls from the Mutoid Waste Company surpassed themselves in bringing us another jaw-dropping display. There were odd and frightening things round every corner…

4. THE WICKER MAN MAYPOLE SONG
You’re having a bit of a quite sit down and a cup of tea on Sunday morning. The National Youth Orchestra are warming up the Pyramid Stage for the last day of Glastonbury 2007. That’s nice. So why do they sing the ultra-creepy Maypole Song from 1970s pagan shockfest The Wicker Man? It’s a traditional country ballad, for sure, but our nerves are jangled at that time of the morning.

5. GIMPS EVERYWHERE!
One couldn’t have a quite pint of strawberry cider without seeing somebody dressed up in outrageous clothing. These two were taking it to extremes. It was 2pm, for pity’s sake!

Did you see anything scary at Glastonbury, or have you tried to forget it all? Let us know what spooked you…
