Bizarrely, Shakin’ Stevens will perform at the 2008 Glastonbury Festival. The jittery rock’n’roller, whose first single was released almost 40 years ago in 1970, will be the opening act on the Pyramid Stage on the Saturday of the festival. The Welshman, born Michael Barrett in 1948, will no doubt delight the early morning crowd – well, early morning for a festival, anyway – with one of his typically charismatic, leg-shaking live sets. ‘Shaky’ scored ten top 5s during the ‘80s, including four number ones: This Ole House, Green Door, Oh Julie and Merry Christmas Everyone. Still a draw in countries like Denmark and South Africa (where his last album went platinum and gold respectively), his appearance is part of a crowd-pleasing Glastonbury tradition to have ‘older’ legends entertain a younger audience – Chas N Dave did the very same thing last year and in 2005.
