Amy asks to 'headline' next year

Amy Winehouse has asked to headline next year's Glastonbury Festival, organiser Michael Eavis revealed today.

The singer, who second from the top of the bill on the Pyramid Stage on Saturday night, wants to make the leap when the event takes place in 2009. Eavis said the event's future is assured for another four years after this year's "triumph" of impressive headliners and generally favourable weather.

"We pulled it off," he said. "All that doom and gloom aboutr selling tickets but we did sell out on Thursday completely. But it was a bit of a struggle I would agree."

Eavis praised Winehouse's performance, despite her rambling banter between songs and her apparently lashing out at a member of the audience because "somebody put their hand on her boob".

"I think she's a superstar really. The crowd of people - there must have been 100,000. All that speculation about her too."

Eavis said he had only spoken briefly to Winehouse: "She said 'can I headline next year?' But I don't know whether her manager approves."

The farmer, who has been organising the event on his land since 1970, said he had succeeded in drawing a younger audience profile this year with his choice of acts.

"It's like a Sunday school at a church, getting younger people into it or we all grow old together."

Despite Noel Gallagher's negative comments about Jay-Z appearing this year - which prompted the rapper's opening parody by playing Wonderwall - Eavis said he would love to get Oasis as a headline act next year. "They can always come back and play. All sins are forgiven."

He said that Jay-Z had performed well and that Chris Martin had sent a congratulatory text after he had viewed the show.

Eavis added: "I think we have got another four yeras in the bag based on how we did this year. I'm sure we'll sell out in a couple of hours next year. We'll keep the registration scheme."
