The first gig indie popsters Scouting For Girls played was at Glastonbury four years ago. Now with a number one album in the bag, this year they’ve got a mid-afternoon slot on the Other Stage in front of tens of thousands. Here, singer/pianist Roy Stride reveals his thoughts about Britain’s biggest and most famous festival.
“I love Glastonbury. I’m trying to work out whether this is my tenth or eleventh time here. I think it’s my tenth. I’ve had some amazing times here, but this is the first time I haven’t camped. It feels kind of wrong being backstage and not really being part of the action, because that’s not what Glastonbury’s about. I mean, it’s alright back here, but it’s just kind of a bit dead. But being a performer, too, it means it’s slightly different. Normally I’d be a bit mashed by now, but I’m not. Next year, we’ll try to do it differently, get a Friday night slot and then enjoy it properly on Saturday and Sunday! But it’s pretty special being here – when we were here four years ago that was our first ever show. Last year we played to about a hundred people, and I carried my own piano to the stage, all by myself! And it was so muddy last year, it was a nightmare. You should have seen the looks I was getting from people! As for Jay-Z playing, to do something different like that is exactly what Glastonbury’s about. I think it’s great.”
