As Kate Nash was finishing her opening set on the Pyramid Stage, the rest of Glastonbury was slowly waking up. Despite the rain and mud from last night, spirits were high across the site and away from main stages the usual weird, wacky and wonderful characters were out in full force. In the Cabaret Marquee, poetry collective Aisle 16 – friends of Miss Nash, in fact – delivered some (relatively) early morning missives to a relaxed crowd, their humorous but sincere performance poems lighting up the dark tent. And outside in the warmth and sun (yes, really!) the hybrid country/soul of Phantom Limb bellowed out from the Jazz World stage.
The sunshine didn’t last, of course. As soon as the mud started to dry, a light drizzle began, which soon turned into a persistent, heavy rain. But the high spirits remained – there were enough places to take shelter and enough activities to stay happy. People kept smiling, the bands kept playing and the fun had only just begun – it was Glastonbury just as it should be!
